Great Ocean Road

After Melbourne we ventured out onto the Great Ocean Road. Needless to say that was sheer delight. Cold weather dampened our enthousiam somewhat: strong winds blowing straight in from Antarctica (there is no land mass between Antarctica and Australia’s south coast). At the same time, the rough weather allowed for some great photographic opportunities: the ocean was rough, blowing up foam everywhere.

At the twelve Apostles (or is it Eleven Apostles these days–since one of them collapsed not long ago), we saw a beached whale. The Sperm whale had been skinned and somewhat torn by the incessant onslaught of the waves.

We had to think long and hard about whether to hang around for another day. But since we had a schedule to keep we decided to push ahead, into the outback…
