Exif, IPTC, XMP & The Mess We’re In

Adding proper support for Exif, IPTC & XMP data to the gallery application that powers my Eyeballism site proved a lot more tricky than could be considered healthy by any stretch of the imagination. We quickly found ourselves trying to decipher the image meta tag soup mess we’re in.

Some of the issues we encountered:

  • data may or may not be present in Exif headers
  • data may be present at different locations
  • data may be present in different formats
  • data may be present in different formats at different locations with different values

Free: FeedDemon, NetNewsWire and Newsgator Online

Newsgator has just made a few of its products available for free:

This might be one of the only ways to easily and continously synchronise feeds between a Mac and a Windows machine. I certainly shall be looking into this option (despite the fact that it would mean I’d no longer use the excellent Vienna RSS reader for the Mac).

Domain Squatters From Another Angle

I have always subscribed to the notion that domain squatters are not doing the industry a favour. And while this belief still holds, I’m starting to look at the issue from a different angle: many decent domain names remain available to lucky upstarts (it is becoming much harder to come up with decent domain names).

Green Electrons

Greenpeace published its latest guide on toxicity of hi-tech companies last month. The guide ranks top electronic manufacturers according to their policies on toxic chemicals and recycling. Unfortunately progress towards a greener hi-tech industry seems slow.

Woodford No More

Been back from Woodford for some time now. It turned out to be a rather wet year. Plenty of water dumped on the coast by the remains of two cyclones.

Decided to stay on for a few days and help restore order to the festival precinct. It also gave me a chance to enjoy the delightful company of the witty and talented musician & journalist Tom Valsberg. Together we spent a few days cleaning up the site. It provided us with a different perspective of the festival (where’s all the people/the venues & what’s this mess we’re in?).
