Leaving The Great Ocean Road

Our last stop on the Great Ocean Road was Warrnambool, where the legendary Mahagony Ship is said to be located (if the legend is true, it would cast a different light on the discovery of Australia by Europeans). Here we changed direction and headed north towards Broken Hill. It felt strange to actually “hook a right” and turn 90 degrees with a straight road leading us towards the heart of the country.

Great Ocean Road

After Melbourne we ventured out onto the Great Ocean Road. Needless to say that was sheer delight. Cold weather dampened our enthousiam somewhat: strong winds blowing straight in from Antarctica (there is no land mass between Antarctica and Australia’s south coast). At the same time, the rough weather allowed for some great photographic opportunities: the ocean was rough, blowing up foam everywhere.

Melbourne—Day Two

For our second day, we booked an apartment in St Kilda. Not knowing much about the city, but enough to know that it is one of the more vibrant buroughs, we agreed that it must be better than the CBD-like surroundings of the hotel we had been staying the previous two nights.

Melbourne—Day One

We spent our first day mainly driving around the city, taking in all the lovely architecture. We also managed to squeeze in a visit to Melbourne Museum. I appreciated the off beat interactive exhibition: each time we moved the swirly graphic in front of us came alive and mimicked our movements. Very nifty. It was even worthwhile wearing those gigantic and highly unfashionable 3D glasses.

Canberra To Melbourne

Our main purpose for visiting, as it would be for many people, was parliament house. Both the old one and the new one. After visiting the stately Old Parliament House, we went to check out the New Parliament House. Along the way we saw chance to visit the National Archives which had some impressive images on display.
